U.S., Civil War

Ames - made for rifles converted by Remington to percussion system

No Scabbard

With a 25-1/2 inch long blade this is the longest of the U.S. Civil War saber bayonets. The date 1862 is stamped on the reverse ricasso. The ribs of the cast brass hilt have a rough surface similar to that of the so-called Zouave bayonet. there is a serial number 10507 stamped on the back flat of the hilt. The lower quillion curves forward at the flat disk finial.

Excellent condition. The beautifully bright blade is marred on the obverse side with numerous speckles and some pitting. The reverse side has very few speckled spots The point is sharp and there are no knicks in the blade edge. The crossguard shows some evidence of handling and use but the rest of the hilt is excellent. The press button and spring are present and work easily. This is a hard to upgrade example of a desirable civil war bayonet.

U S Made, post civil war

Ames-made for Winchester export, 1873

Slightly curved 20-1/8 inch yataghan blade with unstopped fullers. The blade is marked on both ricassos, a letter B on the obverse and an Imperial German acceptance mark on the reverse. .Cast brass hilt is adorned with a nicely detailed feather motif. The characteristic notch is on the rear of the obverse side of the muzzle ring. The lower quillion curves forward slightly and has flattened dome disk finials.

.Very good plus blade is graying and is peppered with numerous shallow pits. The point is very slightly rounded, less than 1/32", and there are no knicks in the blade edge. The excellent, very attractive hilt is undamaged with a working press button and leaf spring. The brass crossguard has only a few minor use and handling dings.

Another hard to find historical bayonet.
